The Jordan Valley comprises approximately 28.5% of

The Jordan Valley comprises approximately 28.5% of the West Bank and serves as the State of Palestine’s primary agricultural hub and its breadbasket.

However, illegal restrictive Israeli land-use policies have limited Palestinian cultivation to a mere 4.7% of the Jordan Valley’s total area.

Strategic control of the Jordan River has been – and remains – a central Israeli objective since before 1967.

This intent was evident in 1964, when Israel’s plan to divert the river’s waters prompted the first Arab summit in Cairo to form a unified front.

Due to diversion projects (mainly by the Israeli National Carrier-NWC) and the construction of dams in the upper part of the Jordan River basin, the historical flow of the Jordan River has decreased from 1300-1500 million cubic meters per year to around 200, most of it untreated wastewater.

This fact sheet (link in bio) analyzes Israeli practices and illustrates how, under the guise of security, Israel has illegally extended its colonization of the Jordan Valley by consistently shrinking the space available to Palestinian localities.

Last night was the Irish premiere of the film #TheVeto @trinitycollegedublin

It gives great insight into the workings of the United Nations with a focus on the use and misuse of The Veto. What does the veto achieve? Is it necessary? Does it work? Would there be a UN without it?

The panel discussion following the screening, featuring Mary Robinson, was illuminating and we were heartened by the ideas discussed. The auditorium was filled with bright young minds eager to question and suggest possible solutions to strengthen the United Nations into the future.

@presidentirl Catherine Connolly was also in attendance for this thought provoking screening.

Bertie Ahern & Gerry Adams spoke earlier in the Oi

Bertie Ahern & Gerry Adams spoke earlier in the Oireachtas committee on how Ireland's peace process can inform peace building in the Middle East.

Dr Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, Ambassador of the State of Palestine was honoured to be invited to observe this important Oireachtas committee meeting.

Some of our take-aways:

- implementation of a peace plan is of central importance

- all parties must have their rights recognised as a starting point, i.e. the right to self-determination and statehood

- Irish people want to help us to achieve peace and justice, perhaps through international peace conferences/mediations

Lots more notes taken to reflect upon.

Mr Ahern and Mr Adams were incredibly honest and generous with their advice.

All TDs and senators attended truly engaged in good faith for justice, humanity and international law.
